There’s now a whole range of dictation apps for the Mac — with very different pricing models and very different technology underneath. This overview compares Twirly fairly with the best-known alternatives, based on each maker’s own published information.

¹ Per the maker’s own materials, the focus is on dictation, not read-aloud. · ² macOS offers a separate “Spoken Content” read-aloud feature in Accessibility, independent of Dictation. · “–” = not specified by the maker, or not known to us.
One app you won’t find in the table: Dragon by Nuance, because Dragon for macOS was discontinued back in 2018. There are also other local and cloud apps such as BetterDictation ($39 lifetime, local, with a delay of a few seconds) or Willow Voice ($12–15/mo, cloud) — the same principles above (local vs. cloud, subscription vs. one-time purchase) apply to them too.
The apps, one by one
Twirly
Twirly is a 3-in-1 app: dictate, edit and read aloud through a single key, system-wide in any Mac app. Everything runs 100% locally on the device — no cloud, no account. CHF 30 once, no subscription.
superwhisper
superwhisper offers the widest model selection in this list and lets you switch between local and cloud processing. That comes at a price: lifetime access costs $249.99 — around eight times what Twirly costs. More in our superwhisper alternative page.
Wispr Flow
Wispr Flow processes dictation in the cloud and costs $15 a month, with no lifetime option. In return, it also runs on Windows. Details on our Wispr Flow alternative page.
MacWhisper
MacWhisper is strong at transcribing existing audio and video files. Live dictation in arbitrary apps is secondary, and there’s no read-aloud feature. More on our MacWhisper alternative page.
VoiceInk
VoiceInk is a pure, local dictation app: it converts speech after you stop talking. It doesn’t offer rewriting or read-aloud — but at $25–49 once, it’s one of the cheaper local options.
Dictato
Dictato is a fast, lean dictation app for the essentials: speech to text, without rewriting or read-aloud. For CHF 30, Twirly adds editing and read-aloud in the same app.
Apple Dictation
The dictation built into macOS is free and good enough for occasional, short pieces of text. Longer dictations tend to time out, there’s no automatic cleanup of filler words, and there’s no dedicated read-aloud workflow either. More on our Dictation on the Mac page.
